Two OhioHealth Hospitals Named Among Nation's Best
Riverside Methodist and Doctors Hospital Only Hospitals in Central Ohio to Make Top 100 List

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Two OhioHealth hospitals - Riverside Methodist Hospital and Doctors Hospital - have been named to the Thomson Reuters list of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals®. The award, published in Modern Healthcare magazine, recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, financial performance, and operational efficiency.

This is the first time Doctors Hospital has been recognized with this honor and the eighth time for Riverside Methodist.

"This award places Doctors Hospital alongside some of the top medical institutions in the country and is well deserved recognition for our staff and physicians and their commitment to delivering the highest level of patient care and service each day," said Michael Reichfield, President of Doctors Hospital. "This is a great honor for Doctors Hospital, especially now as we prepare to open our new, state-of-the-art emergency department and one of the most advanced and comprehensive medical education centers in the nation." Doctors Hospital was recognized in the "Major Teaching Hospital" category.

"This is a real reflection of the quality care Riverside Methodist's patients rely on," said Riverside Methodist Hospital President Bruce Hagen. "More than that, earning this recognition for the eighth time speaks to the consistently strong work each physician, nurse, associate and volunteer provides every day, to every patient. Their commitment to our patients is what makes this award possible and meaningful." Riverside Methodist was recognized in the "Teaching Hospitals (with 200 or more acute care beds)" category.

The winners were identified through an in-depth analysis, the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks study. The study evaluated 3,000 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in nine areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, cash-to-debt ratio, patient satisfaction, and adherence to clinical standards of care. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

The 100 Top Hospitals treated sicker patients requiring more complex treatment, yet had better patient outcomes and lower costs. If all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as Medicare patients treated in the winning hospitals:
* More than 107,500 additional patients would survive each year.
* Nearly 132,000 patient complications would be avoided annually.
* Expenses would decline by $5.9 billion a year.
* The average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day.

"We are honored by this national recognition of two of our well-known teaching hospitals," said Bruce Vanderhoff, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer, OhioHealth. "These rankings affirm the unwavering commitment of our physicians and associates to provide every patient with exceptional care and reflect OhioHealth's long-standing commitment to clinical excellence."

The winning hospitals were announced in the March 30 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine.
Riverside Methodist was included in the Teaching Hospitals category and Doctors Hospital was included in the Major Teaching Hospitals category. They were the only hospitals in Columbus to be recognized.

Riverside Methodist and Doctors Hospital are both recognized as national leaders in undergraduate and graduate medical education, training past and future generations of physicians in a broad range of specialties.
